It is good too see actions like IKEA’s one, which shows social and environmental responsibility, with their plans to free recycle any CFL bulbs that walks through its door. CFLs and much better than incandescent light bulbs if we mean energy efficiency, but there is one issue with them. It can’t be recycled with glass bottles, thanks to its mercury content. They plan to take old CFLs off of your hands and recycle them for free. All that mercury can either get wasted in landfills, or it could get reused by bulb companies. Unfortunately, there’s no retail focus on recycling the bulbs. Even Wal-Mart, which has a serious love affair with the bulbs, currently has no plans to recycle CFLs.
All you need to do is bring your used mercury containing lightbulbs to the IKEA store for free disposal. IKEA offers the perfect solution: a Free Take Back program offering recycle bins in all IKEA stores. Or for lamp disposal information for your state, please go to www.lamprecycle.org to obtain more information.
