It all begin when 2004 tsunami hit the Maldives islands, submerging for several minutes. Those waters retreated, but rising sea levels from global warming won’t be so transient. I saw some comments under this topic that the Dutch have been doing this for 700 years or more, as have it in UK, and peoples ask what’s new? I think that having more countries and nationalities into this initiative is positive sign for our collective effort to build world wide network of responsible citizens. Plans to adapt to a warmer world include a flood-resistant island.
President Gayoom who initially tried political solutions is happy that the Maldives was the first country to sign the Kyoto protocol to fight global warming. But that hasn’t done much yet to slow down sea-level rise and that might be recognized as their role.
