G8 summit in Heiligendamm climate declaration
Recently in Heiligendamm (Germany) was the latest G8 summit. Probably many of you will be interested in the declaration of the G8 summit, which was agreed yesterday by the leaders of the G8 countries. As usual we refrain from a political analysis, but as scientists we note that it is rewarding to see that the results of climate science are fully acknowledged by the heads of state. The leading industrialised nations (G8) aim to at least halve global CO2 emissions by 2050. The Heads of State and Government agreed at Heiligendamm to achieve this goal together as part of a UN process. The big emerging economies are also to be incorporated in the process. The so-called IPCC Report found that global warming is largely the result of human activity. Only by limiting CO2 emissions will it be possible to stop global warming. In order to avoid wide-ranging consequences, the international experts believe that it is absolutely essential that global warming be limited to 1.5 to 2.5°C (UN Climate Report: Joint global action is required). The Group of 8 industrialised nations recognise the statements and goals in the IPPC Report. “Now we need to work together to get as many countries as possible across the world to undertake to do something,” the German Chancellor said.

Brief Intro of Kyoto Protocol
The efforts of changing climate has their basis which can be formed as documents, legal issues and other international treaties. One of them is the Kyoto Protocol.

The Kyoto Protocol is is a protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change that was adopted in Kyoto in 1997. This Kyoto Protocol establishes legally binding greenhouse gas (GHG) emission targets for developing countries. The Protocol has not yet been ratified by all member countries except for Australia and the U.S. The Protocol includes flexibility mechanisms to help countries meet their emission reduction targets. One of these flexibility mechanisms was the creation of carbon credits available for trading. These carbon credits offer an opportunity for individual citizens to have a real impact on the cessation of climate change.

Countries that ratify this protocol commit to reduce their emissions of carbon dioxide and five other greenhouse gases, or engage in emissions trading if they maintain or increase emissions of these gases. The objective is the stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system.

Kyoto Protocol is one of the basis to reduce pollution and concentrate on stopping the Global Warming, and that’s why i recommend reading its full text and think about it.
